Summary: Supports promising graduate students’ education and research in crystallography-related fields worldwide.
Key Information: For the stated 2027 award, students graduating before July 1, 2027 are ineligible.
The International Centre for Diffraction Data (ICDD) established the Ludo Frevel Crystallography Scholarship to encourage promising graduate students to pursue crystallographically oriented research. It supports students’ education and research across an interdisciplinary field spanning physics, chemistry, geology, molecular biology, metallurgy, and materials science. The program recognizes crystallography’s role in revealing the atomic structure of matter through X-ray, electron, and neutron diffraction.
Supported by private and industrial contributions, the scholarship honors Ludo Frevel, a pioneer in powder diffraction and former ICDD board chairman. It supports work ranging from crystal structure analysis and morphology to phase identification and materials characterization. The award is educational support, not payment for ICDD services, a grant-in-aid, or funding given in expectation of performing ICDD-reviewed research.
