The Ida Halpern Fellowship and Award, administered by the Society for Ethnomusicology (SEM), supports research on Native American music of the United States and Canada and recognizes the publication of that work. The program combines a research fellowship with an additional award after a related book or article is published. It is open to established scholars, recent Ph.D.s, and Ph.D. candidates who have completed all program requirements except dissertation research.
The program gives preference to research based on Dr. Halpern’s collection of Northwest Coast music. Past supported projects have explored powwow music, Mohawk social song and dance, Apache prisoner-of-war music, residential school survivors’ testimonial vocality, and Northwest Coast First Nations song. The fellowship and award are offered biennially in odd-numbered years.
