Fluorinated Gas Reduction Program supports industrial and commercial food refrigeration projects that replace or build systems using natural ultra low GWP refrigerants to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Funder: Illinois Environmental Protection Agency
Due Dates (Anticipated): January 2027 (Application deadline)
Funding Amounts: Incremental replacement costs plus an additional incentive; ultra low GWP new construction also eligible
Summary: Supports industrial and commercial food refrigeration projects adopting natural ultra low GWP refrigerants to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Key Information: Replacement refrigerants must have a GWP below 10, and refrigerants extracted from replaced systems must be destroyed.
The Fluorinated Gas Reduction Program is administered by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and funded through U.S. EPA’s Climate Pollution Reduction Grants. It supports adoption of natural ultra low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants in industrial and commercial food refrigeration. Projects may replace high GWP refrigeration systems or construct new ultra low GWP systems. Natural refrigerant examples include carbon dioxide, ammonia, and propane.
The competitive program prioritizes significant greenhouse gas reductions, replicability, and benefits to areas of environmental justice concern. Transitioning away from high GWP refrigerants can reduce or eliminate ozone-depleting substances and greenhouse gas emissions. Safety and technological improvements also allow natural refrigerant systems to operate more efficiently than their predecessors.
