Description
Illinois’ Underground Storage Tank (UST) Fund helps tank owners and operators pay for cleaning up petroleum leaks and satisfies federal financial assurance requirements for Illinois tank owners and operators. Established in 1989, it supports early action, site classification, site investigation, and corrective action, including associated materials and services.
The Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) determines applicant eligibility and deductibles. Illinois EPA reviews budgets and payment requests for reasonable, eligible costs consistent with the associated technical plan, then processes payment vouchers. The Office of the Comptroller issues payments. Different payment procedures apply under Part 731, Part 732, or Part 734, depending on when the release was reported and whether the owner or operator elected to proceed under another regulatory framework.
