Description
The North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Integrated Mobility Division (IMD) administers this annual matching grant program to support comprehensive bicycle, pedestrian, and multimodal planning. Created jointly with the Transportation Planning Division in January 2004, the program helps communities identify priority projects, develop transportation networks, and establish policies and implementation strategies that improve walking, bicycling, and access to transit.
Funding supports new plans, updates to existing plans, and abbreviated project acceleration studies for smaller municipalities. Multimodal network plans examine connections between transit and bicycle and pedestrian networks, rather than replacing transit operations plans or addressing roadway capacity. The program funds planning, not construction, with the goal of helping communities prepare improvements for implementation.
