Description
Improvement of Public Spaces is a funding objective within the William Penn Foundation’s Environment and Public Space program. It aims to help improve at least 100 existing public spaces in Philadelphia by 2035. Guided by community feedback, the objective emphasizes quality and equitable availability rather than creating more spaces, with particular attention to neighborhoods that have experienced generations of disinvestment.
Supported work can include physical improvements, better signage, programming and activation, and advocacy and coalition building for long-term care of public spaces. These investments seek to strengthen social connections, free expression, mental and physical health, and access to refuge during extreme weather and civil emergencies. The Foundation measures progress by the number of public spaces its grants help improve.
