Summary: Supports promising cancer-focused NIH applications that narrowly missed funding, with the goal of increasing cancer-focused NIH support.
Key Information: Projects must first be considered by the IU External Resubmission Grant opportunity and remain unfunded at the University level.
The Cancer Center “Near-Miss” NIH R01 Initiative is run by the IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center and listed through Indiana CTSI. It provides funding consideration for cancer-focused, principal investigator-directed NIH applications that have been reviewed once, missed the NIH pay line, and have strong potential to obtain external funding. Its goal is to increase the cancer-focused NIH funding base by supporting promising research between an unsuccessful NIH review and renewed pursuit of external support.
The initiative encompasses R01, R42, and R44 projects, as well as P01 and SPORE applications. Proposals need not target the National Cancer Institute: applications to other NIH institutes may be considered when they have significant cancer relevance. The Cancer Center’s Executive Committee approves the initial draft cover letter before applicants proceed to a full application.
