Innovation Grant (Pilot Study) supports research teams studying novel adapted grazing environments to improve equine welfare and develop practical, sustainable techniques for horse owners.
Funder: Horses and Humans Research Foundation
Due Dates: December 4, 2026 (Application deadline)
Funding Amounts: Up to US$10,000 for a maximum of 18 months
Summary: Supports pilot research evaluating novel adapted grazing environments that improve equine welfare and help equines and their ecosystems thrive.
Key Information: Awardees must help create a free interactive platform, present at an HHRF conference, and deliver a webinar.
The Horses and Humans Research Foundation (HHRF) supports innovative pilot studies evaluating adapted grazing environments, such as track systems and paddock paradise. The 2026/2027 call focuses on enrichment and manageable, sustainable access to resources while maintaining equine welfare. Research must draw on One Health principles, recognizing connections between people, animals, plants, and their shared environment, and integrate the Five Domains Model of animal welfare.
Projects should generate data validating a novel approach, measure effects on equine nutrition, exercise, and interactions with the environment, humans, and other animals, and assess feasibility for horse owners. The program aims to connect rigorous research with practical techniques accessible to owners and equine professionals. After completing the study, the funded team will collaborate with HHRF on a free interactive platform based on its findings.
