Description
The Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) funds research to help develop an integrated pest management plan for burrowing shrimp in Willapa Bay and Grays Harbor. High shrimp populations soften mudflats on coastal shellfish farms, causing shellfish to sink and suffocate. The program seeks effective control measures that minimize potential environmental impacts and help shellfish cultivation continue on tidelands.
Research interests include physical, chemical, biological and mechanical controls; shellfish bed restoration; long-term shrimp monitoring; climate-change impacts; economic impacts on farms and the coastal shellfish industry; and public engagement. WSDA is particularly interested in collaborative projects and partnerships among research institutions, agencies and industry with potential for rapid implementation.
