    Description

The International Society for the History of Rhetoric (ISHR) awards six research grants annually to individuals pursuing advanced research on the theory and practice of rhetoric in all periods and languages. Supported subjects include rhetoric’s relationship to poetics, literary theory and criticism, philosophy, politics, religion, law, and other aspects of its socio-cultural context. Research designed to further pedagogy in rhetorical speaking and writing is outside the program’s scope.

The grants support projects that can be completed within one year and disseminated to scholarly audiences. ISHR seeks to award at least one grant to a promising graduate student or postdoctoral researcher. Selection emphasizes scholarly significance, the quality of the project description, the promise of the research, and the likelihood of completing the project and disseminating its results.
