    Description

The Ittleson Fellowships, funded by the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, support doctoral dissertation research through the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts, the National Gallery of Art’s research institute. They form part of the Center’s predoctoral fellowship program in the history, theory, and criticism of the visual arts, supporting dissertation completion and research travel on topics other than the art of Europe or the United States.

Two fellowships are awarded annually. The 24-month fellowship combines a year of dissertation research abroad with a second year in residence at the Center to complete the dissertation. The 12-month fellowship supports research in the United States or abroad without a Center residency requirement. Fellows in residence participate in lectures, colloquia, and discussions with the Center’s scholarly community.
