Key Information: Fellows must complete at least five full research days in residence and share their findings after the visit.
The James Marshall Fellowship, administered by the University of Connecticut Library’s Archives & Special Collections, supports authors and illustrators near the beginning of their careers in creating new children’s literature. Projects may involve works written, illustrated, or produced for the entertainment or instruction of children and young adults.
Fellows draw inspiration and insight from the Northeast Children’s Literature Collection, which includes original artwork and archives of more than 100 children’s authors and illustrators, the James Marshall Papers, and substantial special collections of children’s books. Selection emphasizes the significance of the proposed creative project and the necessity of consulting the collection. Particular consideration is given to projects using the papers of Francelia Butler, Marc Simont, Esphyr Slobodkina, Cyndy Szekeres, and Ed Young.
