Description
The Japan Foundation’s Japanese Studies Fellowship Program promotes Japanese studies overseas by supporting outstanding scholars, researchers, and professionals conducting research in Japan. Administered for U.S. applicants by Japan Foundation New York, it funds humanities and social science projects, including comparative research when a significant portion concerns Japan. Fellowships support visiting researchers rather than students enrolled in Japanese degree programs.
The 2027–2028 cycle offers long-term research, short-term intensive research, and doctoral dissertation fellowships. Selection considers the project’s significance, feasibility, need for residence in Japan, affiliation arrangements, and dissemination plans. Social science applications are particularly welcomed. The program also considers contributions to diversity in the field and seeks disciplinary, geographic, and institutional diversity.
