Description
Established in 1998, the Jeanne S. Chall Research Fellowship is administered by the International Literacy Association (ILA) to encourage reading research by promising scholars. It supports doctoral students planning or beginning dissertations and graduate students embarking on independent research studies, carrying forward the work to which Dr. Jeanne S. Chall dedicated her academic life.
The fellowship emphasizes beginning reading, including theory, research, and practice that improve learning to read; readability methods that predict text difficulty; and the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of reading difficulties. Other priorities include stages of reading development, the relationship between vocabulary and reading, and diagnosing and teaching adults with limited reading ability. Proposal excellence is a primary selection consideration.
