    Description

The John W. Wells Grants-in-Aid of Research Program is administered by the Paleontological Research Institution (PRI) to support undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers conducting collections-based research in any field of paleontology. Grants support visits to PRI’s collections in Ithaca, New York.

PRI houses one of North America’s largest collections of invertebrate fossils, with particular strengths in Cenozoic mollusks from the Western Hemisphere and marine invertebrates of the northeastern United States, especially the Devonian of central New York. Supported research has explored fossil diversity, evolutionary relationships, morphological variation, predatory interactions, and extinction. The program honors John W. Wells (1907–1994), a former president of PRI’s Board of Trustees, longtime Cornell University geology faculty member, and authority on fossil and living corals.
