The Joyce Foundation is a private, non-partisan philanthropy based in Chicago that invests in public policies benefiting residents of the Great Lakes region. Its six program areas are Culture, Democracy, Education & Economic Mobility, Environment, Gun Violence Prevention & Justice Reform, and Journalism. The Foundation supports state and local policy efforts in the region, as well as national public policy designed to affect those states.
Support spans three phases: building the foundations for policy adoption through research, analysis, and policy development; advancing adoption through communications, public education, advocacy, coalition-building, and grassroots organizing; and implementing, enforcing, and evaluating policies. The Foundation prefers requests that advance racial equity, economic mobility, or outcomes for the next generation, while allowing consideration of other projects that improve Great Lakes residents’ lives.
