Description
The Joyce Tracy Fellowship supports research on newspapers and magazines, including projects that use these materials as primary documentation for historical inquiry. Administered by the American Antiquarian Society (AAS), it is part of the Society’s one- to two-month residential academic research fellowship program. The award derives from an endowment established in memory of Joyce Tracy, the Society’s longtime curator of newspapers and periodicals.
The fellowship supports both the study of periodicals themselves and research into the historical subjects they document. Past projects have explored exchange and citation practices in antebellum newspapers, women working as compositors and editors, Confederate nationalism in the Southern press, abolitionism, and women’s voting rights. Fellows use the AAS library’s collections in Worcester, Massachusetts, for research and writing.
