Description
The Julius Axelrod Award for Biochemical Mechanisms Underlying Drug Action and Mentoring is presented by the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET). It recognizes significant contributions to understanding the biochemical mechanisms underlying the pharmacological actions of drugs, together with contributions to mentoring other pharmacologists. Its specialty is general pharmacology, and its focus is recognition of established investigators’ accomplishments rather than a separate program of funded project work.
Established in 1991, the award honors Julius Axelrod, an American pharmacologist who shaped neuroscience, drug metabolism, and biochemistry and mentored numerous prominent pharmacologists. ASPET assumed responsibility for the award from the Catecholamine Club in 2007. It is part of ASPET’s Scientific Achievement Awards, which recognize accomplishments in specific areas of pharmacology and contributions to the discipline more broadly.
