Description
The Keith Michael Andrus Cardiac Award is administered by the Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA) and honors Keith’s legacy through research on cardiomyopathy associated with Friedreich’s ataxia (FA). Proposals should advance understanding of cardiac involvement in FA, develop treatments, or address both aims. The award sits within FARA’s competitive research program, which supports work from basic research through drug development and clinical research.
Cardiac research priorities include understanding molecular mechanisms, genetic factors, biochemical pathways, and metabolism of the FA heart; comparing FA cardiomyopathy with other cardiac diseases; identifying biomarkers for cardiac outcomes and risk stratification; and developing therapies to reduce cardiac morbidity and mortality. Research may also assess currently approved therapeutic interventions for use in FA.
