The Kentucky Academy of Science Foundation makes the Marcia Athey and Botany Funds available for scientific research planned and conducted by students of Kentucky secondary schools, colleges, and universities under faculty supervision. Faculty research projects may also receive consideration when funds permit. Research may address any of the physical, biological, behavioral, or engineering sciences and should take place within Kentucky’s general boundaries, although field investigations may extend beyond political boundaries.
The program values disciplinary significance, a clear research justification, innovation, educational quality, and a problem-based focus. It supports direct research expenses and publication page charges. Previously funded work includes amphibian growth under climate-change temperature regimes, plant-pollinator mutualisms, wetland plants, salamander gene flow, insect population variation, and cave beetle phylogeography.
