The Kidney Artificial Intelligence Discovery Challenge: From Nebulae to Nephrons, organized by NIH Challenges and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), seeks innovative applications of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and computational methods to analyze kidney tissue images and associated multi-omics and clinical data from the Kidney Precision Medicine Project (KPMP). The goal is to move beyond traditional analysis to uncover hidden structures, rare features, or unexpected disease signatures that could improve understanding of kidney disease mechanisms. The challenge encourages cross-disciplinary collaboration—engaging AI researchers, pathologists, nephrologists, and data scientists—to develop anomaly-detection techniques inspired by astronomy and other data-intensive sciences.
