    Description

The Kurt Gottschalk Science Fund, administered by the Society of American Foresters (SAF), supports projects that advance forestry through new and ongoing research, technological applications, and continuing education. Its purpose is to transfer scientific knowledge into management practice, benefiting forestry professionals and the public through science-informed decisions.

The fund supports applied research alongside outreach, professional development, and leadership activities. Research awards may supplement an existing project to address another question, provide seed funding, or fund an entire project. Program goals include collaboration among SAF entities and external groups, knowledge sharing, and recruitment and engagement of diverse leadership in forestry and natural resource professions. The fund honors USDA Forest Service scientist Kurt W. Gottschalk and his commitment to applied research and mentoring.
