Kentucky IDeA Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (KY INBRE) offers developmental awards to incorporate authentic research projects into undergraduate courses. These course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) expose students to the scientific process, strengthen their understanding of biological concepts, and prepare them for research careers through inquiry-based laboratory work. Awards support faculty course development and the supplies and equipment needed to establish these experiences.
The program seeks to reach more students than faculty–student apprenticeship models can accommodate, while addressing the cost and instructional time associated with authentic research. It also enables faculty to explore new projects and involve additional students while combining teaching and research. KY INBRE favors novel CUREs, frequent course offerings, and broader student participation, and encourages publication, sharing of course materials, and additional NIH support for longer-term expansion.
