The KY INBRE Faculty Start-Up Award program helps Kentucky colleges and universities recruit qualified junior faculty with the training and motivation to establish externally funded biomedical research programs. Awards complement institutional seed support to create first-year research start-up packages for tenure-track assistant professor candidates working in areas consistent with National Institutes of Health (NIH) priorities.
The program emphasizes establishing a competitive laboratory and involving undergraduate students in research. Support can cover laboratory supplies, equipment, core facilities, summer salary, and undergraduate research assistants, rather than experimental activities themselves. Recruited faculty become KY INBRE members and receive research and proposal-development support through the Mentoring Core, with the goal of securing independent NIH funding.
