Description
The federal Land and Water Conservation Fund supports the acquisition and development of public outdoor recreation areas and facilities. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) administers the program in the state, evaluates applications, and recommends projects to the National Park Service for final approval.
Projects are evaluated against established criteria and Michigan’s 2023–2027 Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan. Development projects can include trails, playgrounds, boating access, campgrounds and other outdoor recreation facilities. Acquisition projects can create or expand public recreation areas, including places that provide access to natural resources. The program aims to expand recreation opportunities while supporting long-term public use of grant-assisted sites.
