Description
The Lazaro J. Mandel Young Investigator Award is administered by the American Physiological Society (APS) to recognize a member who shows outstanding promise through research in epithelial or renal physiology. It focuses on the applicant’s current and planned research program, its promise for these fields, and the impact of that work. The award is intended for researchers holding an assistant professor rank or equivalent position who work within the United States.
Established in 1999, the award honors Lazaro J. Mandel, a Duke University physiology professor and longtime APS member. Mandel pioneered work in renal physiology and metabolism, including instrumentation that enabled optical monitoring of respiratory enzymes in living cells and helped investigators probe molecular aspects of tissue metabolism.
