Description
The Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) runs Lead Hazard Reduction with funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Office of Lead Hazard Control and Healthy Homes. The program helps income-eligible households address lead-based paint hazards in homes built before 1978. Eligible homes receive a full lead inspection and risk assessment; identified hazards are addressed through interim controls, abatement, or both, followed by clearance testing.
Local program providers manage projects from application intake through final clearance. Some homes may also receive funding for other health and safety hazards. Families may need temporary relocation during remediation. DHCD’s March 2025–March 2029 workplan aims to make 192 housing units lead-safe and prioritizes children with elevated blood lead levels.
