The Science History Institute’s Othmer Library offers Library Travel Grants to support in-person research and scholarly exploration of its primary materials in Philadelphia. The grants help defray travel and accommodation costs for short research visits, rather than providing a separate project award. Available materials include rare and modern books, manuscripts, archival collections, oral histories, fine art, artifacts, and scientific instruments.
The Institute’s collections focus on the history of chemistry, chemical engineering, and the modern life sciences, with materials ranging from the 15th century to the present. They also offer resources for historians of art, business, labor, the environment, technology, and medicine, as well as scholars in science and technology studies. Applicants must explain how their proposed research will use these collections.
