Description
The North Dakota Industrial Commission’s Lignite Research, Development and Marketing Program is a state–industry partnership focused on near-term, practical research and development that preserves and enhances North Dakota’s lignite resources. It supports economic, efficient, and clean uses of lignite and lignite-derived products, along with land reclamation research, marketing, and educational activities relating to the industry.
Established in 1987, the program has funded work to diversify the Great Plains Synfuels Plant, improve reclamation efficiency and cost-effectiveness, burn lignite more cleanly in existing boilers, identify new markets, and address challenges from proposed environmental regulations. Its goals include preserving and creating jobs, supporting industry growth and economic stability, and developing lignite resources in an environmentally sound manner.
