The Lipedema Foundation’s Investigator Initiated Research Programs support basic and translational research that builds the field’s capacity to develop new therapeutics. The Foundation acts as a research catalyst and partner, with particular interest in technologies and infrastructure that make future clinical trials possible. Priorities include establishing Lipedema diagnostic tools, defining robust trial outcomes and endpoints, and advancing novel biomarker and imaging strategies. Other well-designed projects are also welcome.
Because knowledge of Lipedema remains limited and inconsistent reporting complicates interpretation, the program emphasizes rigorous study design, clear diagnostic definitions, representative patient samples, appropriate controls, and well-defined analytic plans. Candidate biomarkers should connect to a specific clinical phenotype and intended context of use. Establishing new mouse models remains a lower priority until human genetics and clinicopathological correlations are better understood.
