Description
The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) administers annual grants from the Litter Control and Recycling Fund, supported by Virginia businesses that pay litter taxes. Non-competitive grants help localities implement, continue, or expand local litter prevention and recycling programs. Eligible programs can be run by a single locality or a group of localities through a cooperative application.
A separate competitive program supports statewide and regional litter prevention and recycling education and pilot projects. Localities applying for a non-competitive grant may also request funding for public information campaigns that discourage the sale and use of expanded polystyrene products and promote alternatives.
