Loeblich and Tappan Student Research Grant supports undergraduate and graduate students studying living or fossil foraminifera and other protists to advance research on these organisms.
Funder: Cushman Foundation for Foraminiferal Research
Due Dates: March 1, 2027 (Annual proposal deadline)
Funding Amounts: Up to $3,000 per award
Summary: Supports undergraduate and graduate student research on living or fossil foraminifera and other protists.
Key Information: Applicants must be Cushman Foundation members at the time of application.
The Cushman Foundation for Foraminiferal Research established this grant in 2004 in memory of Alfred R. Loeblich, Jr. and Helen Tappan. It supports current undergraduate and graduate students with developed research projects on any aspect of living or fossil foraminifera or other protists, including diatoms, coccolithophorids, dinoflagellates, acritarchs, and radiolaria.
The program’s scope includes geochemistry related to living or fossil foraminifera, but excludes research using microfossils only as geochemical indicators. Previously funded projects have explored microplastic incorporation in foraminiferal tests, diatom biomass and community structure, fossil diversity, shell morphology, reproduction, and responses to environmental change. The Foundation’s Board of Directors judges proposals on scientific merit and financial need.
