Undergraduate Research Bursaries 2027 support undergraduates undertaking supervised mathematics projects to gain research experience and explore careers in scientific research.
Funder: London Mathematical Society
Due Dates: February 1, 2027 (Application) | September 30 (Final report, or upon completion if later)
Funding Amounts: £335 per week outside London or £350 per week in London; 6–8 weeks full-time or 12–16 weeks part-time
Summary: Supports supervised undergraduate mathematics research to build research experience and encourage careers in scientific research.
Key Information: Supervisors must apply on behalf of named students; students cannot apply directly.
The London Mathematical Society’s Undergraduate Research Bursaries give undergraduates with research potential experience of mathematical research and encourage them to consider careers in scientific research. The scheme supports supervised projects in mathematics, including interdisciplinary work with significant mathematical content. Projects may run full-time for six to eight weeks or part-time for twelve to sixteen weeks.
The emphasis is on meaningful research engagement: projects should have clearly defined, achievable objectives and give students scope for thought and initiative rather than use them as general assistants. Students contribute to project design, while regular in-person supervision develops research and communication skills. Awards are administered through participating institutions and departments, with applications assessed for student suitability, project suitability and supervision quality.
