The Readiness and Recreation Initiative is part of the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund. The National Park Service runs the national competition; Washington’s Recreation and Conservation Office (RCO) reviews and submits Washington proposals. Grants support acquisition of land, wetlands, or waters for public outdoor recreation, including new parks, additions to existing recreation areas, and connections such as trails. Acquisition may be paired with new outdoor facilities, such as sports fields, playgrounds, and walking trails.
The initiative aims to expand recreation for military communities and the general public while preserving land uses compatible with military operations. It also seeks to protect natural resources, strengthen disaster resilience, and address nearby communities’ needs. Funded parks and recreation areas must remain available for public outdoor recreation in perpetuity.
