The Maine Humanities Council’s Major Grants support larger humanities programs and projects undertaken by nonprofit organizations and communities across Maine. Funded work can include exhibits, conferences, film and video productions, podcasts, radio programs, discussions, and community initiatives. Projects must place humanities content at their heart, inviting participants to deepen their understanding of human experience through interpretation, analysis, or discussion.
The program emphasizes rich, well-developed humanities content, participation from a topic expert, community partnerships, and broad public outreach. Projects should engage Maine audiences and involve their communities throughout planning and implementation. Organizations serving or led by communities traditionally under-resourced in the humanities are encouraged to apply. Proposals are assessed for the strength and clarity of their content, goals, impact, design, budget, community engagement, and alignment with MHC priorities.
