The Many Voices Fellowships at Playwrights’ Center support early-career Black playwrights, playwrights of color, and Indigenous playwrights who demonstrate extraordinary potential and artistic vision. Created in 1994 in partnership with the Jerome Foundation, the program provides a home for writers bringing diverse voices and aesthetics to American theater.
During the two-year residency, fellows work individually and as a cohort with the Center’s artistic staff to develop plays and connect with producers of new work. Customized support includes workshops with professional teams, consultations with experienced artists, career support, and opportunities for teaching and community engagement. The fellowship combines paid employment, development resources, and professional connections to advance each writer’s artistic growth. At the end of the term, fellows become Affiliated Writers of Playwrights’ Center.
