The Carl & Marilynn Thoma Foundation awards annual predoctoral and postdoctoral fellowships for research that advances understanding of the art of the Spanish Americas. Applicants may come from any discipline, and international scholars, particularly those from Latin America, are strongly encouraged to apply. The program provides unrestricted research support devoted exclusively to this field, focusing on colonial South America and the Spanish Caribbean, particularly painting and sculpture.
Projects should demonstrate original scholarship and/or make a significant contribution to understanding the region’s art and history. Fellowships last one to two years and must culminate in major, measurable outcomes, such as museum exhibitions, dissertations, books, scholarly essays, or lecture series. The awards are portable and support research activities and expenses needed to accomplish the proposed project.
