Description
The Michigan Department of Transportation’s Marine Passenger Program funds capital improvements for publicly operated or owned ferries that provide essential transportation between island communities and the mainland. Established under Act 51, it is part of Michigan’s passenger transportation programs, which are supported by the Comprehensive Transportation Fund. Ferry operating support is provided through the separate Local Bus Operating Assistance Program.
The program identifies services connecting Beaver Island with Charlevoix, carrying passengers and vehicles across Lake Charlevoix on the Ironton Ferry, and linking Drummond, Neebish, and Sugar islands with the Chippewa County mainland. These ferries help residents obtain essential commodities and reach employment, medical care, school, and shopping.
