    Description

The Mary M. Hughes Research Fellowship in Texas History is administered by the Texas State Historical Association (TSHA) and awarded annually for the best research proposal on twentieth-century Texas history. It supports historical research with a defined purpose and an intended end product, such as an article, book, or exhibition. Applicants explain both the research they plan to undertake and their need for funding.

The fellowship was established in 1999 by Mary M. Hughes’s thirteen children to celebrate their mother’s eighty-ninth birthday and her fiftieth year in Texas. Honoring her love of Texas and its history, it forms part of TSHA’s work to encourage the study of the state’s past.
