The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) administers this competitive program to help establish and offer driver’s education within Maryland public high schools at no cost to students. It supports local education agencies (LEAs) and not-for-profit organizations in providing school-based instruction.
The program gives priority to high schools where more than 40% of enrolled students receive or are eligible for the federal Free and Reduced-Price Meals (FARMs) program. Its purpose is to give high schools the ability and opportunity to develop driver’s education programs while making participation free for students. MSDE staff provide technical assistance throughout the application process.
