Mathematical Sciences Focused Research Groups (MS-FRG), administered by NSF’s Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences, supports collaborative research on outstanding problems whose importance, scope, and complexity require a concentrated group effort. Collaborations may focus within one area or connect multiple areas, with the aim of producing advances with wide consequences for mathematics, statistics, and potentially other disciplines.
The program welcomes novel, creative approaches, including high-risk, high-reward research and challenges relevant to national priorities such as critical and emerging technologies. Suitable opportunities include accumulated results pointing toward a breakthrough, new possibilities following a recent breakthrough, or interdisciplinary cooperation that could accelerate progress. Anticipated advances in other disciplines must be accompanied by significant anticipated advances and innovations in mathematics and statistics.
