Indiana Humanities’ Matters of Religion Grants support local public programs that explore religion’s role in Hoosiers’ lives and how religious liberty influences education, democracy, culture, and human experience. Funded by Lilly Endowment Inc., the grants form part of a multiyear initiative launched in conjunction with the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The initiative encourages curiosity about others’ religious lives to strengthen freedom and Indiana’s civic fabric.
Supported formats include reading-and-discussion programs, community conversations, educational resources and digital tools, films and podcasts, speakers and panels, exhibitions, oral histories, and tours or maps. Programs may examine freedom of conscience, interfaith collaboration, religious inclusion and exclusion, legal decisions, or religious traditions’ influence on community life. Funding supports public programming, not standalone research.
