The Maxwell/Hanrahan Scientific Illustration Internship at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) provides aspiring scientific illustrators with hands-on experience translating scientific research into accurate, engaging visual content. Made possible by a gift from the Maxwell/Hanrahan Foundation, the program generally offers a 10–12 week experience working closely with museum curators and researchers, culminating in an illustration or series of illustrations for public outreach.
The 2026 guidelines describe a full-time, paid, 10-week appointment in the Paleontology department. The intern works in Dr. Jin Meng’s lab, collaborating with paleontologists on skeletal and life reconstructions of fossil mammals and photographs of specimens of various sizes. The intended outputs are illustrations and photographs highlighting three new fossil mammal species, suitable for research publication and public outreach.
