Mayo Clinic’s Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency in Arizona combines clinical training with research and scholarly activity to prepare physicians for independent practice and leadership in rehabilitation medicine. The three-year advanced program offers inpatient and outpatient experiences at Mayo Clinic, Barrow Neurological Institute, and Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Training includes musculoskeletal and neurologic rehabilitation, pediatric rehabilitation, electromyography, interventional procedures, and spasticity management.
Research funding is available for approved resident projects, frequently involving musculoskeletal ultrasound, the epidemiology of specific disorders, or new rehabilitation interventions. Residents receive faculty mentorship, access to research infrastructure, and protected research time during select outpatient rotations. They plan a project early in PGY-2 and complete it during residency, strengthening analytical thinking and critical review of literature while contributing to rehabilitation medicine.
