Summary: Supports mentored medical student research that generates new knowledge about emergency medical care.
Key Information: The preceptor’s primary appointment must be in a department or division of emergency medicine.
The Emergency Medicine Foundation (EMF) and Society for Academic Emergency Medicine Foundation (SAEMF) jointly support medical students gaining exposure to emergency medicine research. The program funds scientific investigations designed to generate new knowledge relating to emergency medical care, including basic science, clinical research, preventive medicine, epidemiology, cost-containment, and emergency medicine teaching and education.
The grant combines research support with an emphasis on the student’s educational experience and the project’s scientific quality and value. Mentorship is central: reviewers consider the preceptor’s research experience and ability to guide the student, alongside institutional personnel, facilities, and commitment to research. Applications may come from individual medical students or emergency medicine residency programs sponsoring student projects.
