Key Information: Only Stanford graduate students within the School of Humanities and Sciences are eligible for the Mellon fellowship.
The Mellon Foundation Dissertation Fellowships support advanced Stanford doctoral students whose dissertation work demonstrates intellectual distinction and whose academic records show timely progress toward degree completion. Funded by the Mellon Foundation, the program is administered jointly by the Stanford Humanities Center and the School of Humanities and Sciences. The 2027–2028 competition supports dissertation research and completion of doctoral work in the humanities, including qualifying interpretive social science projects.
Selection emphasizes the quality and precision of the dissertation proposal, its scholarly significance, and the likelihood of completing the degree during the fellowship tenure. Applicants are typically, but not exclusively, in their fifth or sixth doctoral year when applying. Mellon awards typically support students entering their sixth year during the fellowship and are not intended to replace the fifth year of Stanford funding.
