The Mercia Barnes Research Grant is administered by the RANZCOG Women’s Health Foundation to assist and promote research in obstetrics, gynaecology and reproductive health in Aotearoa New Zealand. It supports projects that further clinical or public education and promote the health and welfare of women, including gender diverse people, and their babies. A central priority is supporting emerging and early career researchers and promoting academia as a career pathway in obstetrics and gynaecology.
The grant was established within the Foundation in 2024, continuing the work of the Mercia Barnes Trust. Named in memory of Dr Mercia Barnes, one of the first New Zealand women to train in obstetrics and gynaecology, the Trust supported more than 50 research projects over thirty years.
