Description
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources administers Volunteer Fire Capacity Grants to help fire departments acquire firefighting equipment for local communities. The program is intended to assist small, rural departments that have difficulty financing basic needs, particularly those protecting publicly owned forested land. It is supported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service under the Cooperative Forest Assistance Act of 1978.
Michigan directs program funding primarily toward equipment. Applications are prioritized in part by the communities and people served, the departments involved, mutual aid arrangements, available water supply, unusual fire hazards and insurance classification.
