Mike Emmerson International Fellowship supports overseas clinicians through UK or Republic of Ireland observerships to share best practice and develop infection prevention and control skills.
Funder: Healthcare Infection Society
Due Dates: Rolling (applications accepted throughout the year)
Funding Amounts: Up to £2,500 for a maximum of four weeks; four awards available
Summary: Supports overseas healthcare professionals undertaking clinical observerships in the UK or Republic of Ireland to develop infection prevention and control practice.
Key Information: Applicants must be postgraduate healthcare professionals in clinical roles, based in World Bank-defined low- or lower-middle-income countries.
The Healthcare Infection Society (HIS) runs this fellowship to help overseas clinicians share best practice in infection prevention and control (IPC) and gain experience managing healthcare-acquired infections. It supports clinical observerships in hospital or community settings in the UK or Republic of Ireland. The scheme replaces the Mike Emmerson Early Career Award and continues Mike Emmerson’s commitment to education outside the UK.
Funding supports travel, accommodation and subsistence, with optional support for essential materials for a small research project undertaken at the host institution during the observership. Research is not required, and choosing not to undertake it does not affect the application outcome. Supported activities must relate to healthcare-associated infections and offer potential clinical impact. Fellows share their experience through a detailed report intended for publication in Infection Prevention in Practice.
