Seed Innovation Fund Program supports MIT researchers exploring new clean energy technologies, processes, software, and analyses with the potential to deliver high-impact advances in the energy transition.
Funder: Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Due Dates (Anticipated): November 2026 (Proposal deadline)
Funding Amounts: Five or more awards annually; more than $32 million awarded across 240 projects since 2008
Summary: Supports exploratory MIT research on new clean energy technologies, processes, software, and analyses that advance the energy transition.
Key Information: Intended for new ideas, not incremental work or additional support for projects already underway.
The MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI) runs the Seed Innovation Fund Program to support innovative, early-stage research with the potential to produce high-impact results for the energy transition. It funds exploratory clean energy work, including new technologies, processes, software, and analyses, and welcomes both established MIT energy experts and principal investigators new to energy research.
Supported projects have produced peer-reviewed publications, follow-on research, and startup companies. Examples include drilling technology for superhot geothermal energy, battery manufacturing using safer and more environmentally friendly alternatives to limiting materials, and membranes that reduce energy use in industrial filtration. Funding comes from MITEI’s Founding and Sustaining Members Program and philanthropic support.
